The ultimate for all publically funded agencies in these financially challenging times is to deliver more, better quality services for less cost at the point that they are needed rather than just where it suits the provider. Following years of efficiency cuts and now reductions in staffing levels due to the recent financial crises this is even more difficult to achieve and can only happen if all agencies work together.
Simply this is what the ‘Berwick Project’ is, it is the County Council using the Berwick area as a test bed for delivering better quality joined up services across all of its activities and those of its partners to make life easier for the residents in the area.
Some of these changes will be bigger than others and take longer i.e. linking up with Scottish Borders Council to deliver seamless provision regardless of which side of the border you work on. Some will be easier and perhaps less visible but equally important to everybody living here i.e. in any services involved in children’s services only collect family information once rather than every single time the service is used.
A conference organised by the Trust was held in October last year which looked at where the communities of the Berwick area wanted to be in 20 years time and what they thought was stopping them getting there and these reports can be seen here & here
The pace of initiatives coming out of the Berwick Project will increase now as will its links with other local initiatives such as Berwick’s Future. |
