.Market Town Welcome
Market Town Welcome was an initiative of the County Council and Northumberland Tourism for the six principal (later increased to eight) market towns within the County. It recognised the importance of tourism to the economy of the county and notwithstanding the role of destination attractions i.e. Alnwick Gardens, Kielder Forest, Hadrian’s Wall etc the role that the market towns have in attracting, enhancing and developing the visitor experience.
A range of activities and enhancements have taken place in each of the eight market towns to try to entice and extend the stays of higher spending, affluent tourists. All eight towns are different and this was recognised with a unique proposition identifying what makes that place special, for Berwick this is:
‘Revel in the beauty of the borders’
A range of enhancements have occurred over the last few years to the tourist offer in Berwick through the Market Town Welcome initiative, these include:

- Visitberwick.com – a new website for people thinking of coming to Berwick where you can plan everything for your visit from making itineries of what to do and what to see to booking accommodation on line www.visitberwick.com
- Electronic guided walk around the walls – a new smart phone app for the Android operating system that will guide you around the walls of Berwick telling the history and story of the town will be coming soon.
